The first annual Best. Week. Ever. recently came to an end in South Bend. It was a week long event hosted by the City of South Bend Venues Parks and Arts. The purpose of the event was to "celebrate our culture, progress, and creativity as a community. Better yet, it is an invitation to celebrate our city and the things that are important to us. It is an opportunity engage with the many facets blending together to make South Bend's story."
With multiple events going on throughout the week, it proved difficult at times to choose which events to attend. Here's are some highlights from my experience of my Best. Week. Ever.
The Belly Burst
An article in the Tribune described this event as "A fundraising run/walk unlike most others." And that it was.
The Belly Burst is an "un-run" and its purpose is to raise money to foster stability for the chronically homeless in South Bend. Filled with donuts and shortcuts, The Belly Burst raised over $7,000 for Hope Ministries and was a great time for all who attended.
Best Wednesday Ever on the West Side
"West Side Wednesday is a grassroots organization formed to support the neighborhoods and local businesses on South Bend’s West Side." And Wednesday on the West Side did not disappoint. From rock walls to dunk tanks to spinning red tops, the evening was full of activities for families of all ages.
It was also packed with culture. From the live mariachi band to the homemade ice cream at La Rosita's, there really was something for everyone (especially those of us who are still kids at heart).
Best Crawfish and Shrimp Boil Ever
On Friday night, Chicory Cafe held the Best Crawfish and Shrimp Boil Ever. And you know it's good it gets a native of Louisiana's approval.
Don't mind me! (Chicory, if you're reading this, please make this a monthly event.)
Best Donut Day Ever
The Best Donut Day Ever was sponsored by The Salvation Army Kroc Center. And from what I'm told, the donuts went fast.
Shout out to Cops and Doughnuts for providing not only these, but the doughnuts for The Belly Burst as well.
Best Fireworks Ever
The Best Fireworks Ever were presented by Barnes & Thornburg and were probably the best attended event of the week. The fireworks that were shot off from the Jefferson bridge were spectacular. The Colfax bridge and Howard Park were open to spectators to show off "the best and biggest fireworks show South Bend has ever seen."
I personally want to send out a huge thank you to all of the Venues Parks and Arts staff, the Best. Week. Ever. volunteers and anyone else who was involved with pulling off such a great event for our city.
Because of weeks like these, I am proud to call South Bend home.
